What to Expect in Your First Life Coaching Session
By Caleb Ighalo, PMHNP-BC — Meet Your Provider — Last reviewed July 28, 2026
At a glance: Your first life coaching session is a conversation about where you are and where you want to go — not a clinical intake or a diagnosis. The International Coaching Federation frames the opening of any coaching relationship around building trust and agreeing on what you’re working toward, and that’s the model this first session follows.
Setting the Foundation
Every coaching relationship starts the same way: with an agreement about what you’re working toward and how you’ll measure progress. Expect the first session to cover what success looks like for you over the coming weeks and months, not just the next hour. There’s no paperwork, no checklist, and no test — just a real conversation about where things stand right now.
What You’ll Actually Talk About
Life coaching sessions are future-focused. You might talk about a career transition, a relationship pattern you want to change, a habit you can’t seem to stick with, or a bigger question about direction and purpose. Caleb will ask direct questions designed to create awareness — not to diagnose, but to help you see your own situation more clearly.
Coaching Isn’t Therapy, and That’s the Point
Coaching is not therapy and isn’t treatment for a mental health condition. If something comes up during a session that looks like it needs clinical evaluation or medication management, that’s a separate conversation and a separate service — Ghalo Mental Health offers both, so nothing falls through the cracks.
How to Prepare
Come with something specific in mind, even if it’s not fully formed — a goal, a decision you’re stuck on, or a pattern you want to interrupt. There’s no paperwork to fill out beforehand and no test to take. The only real preparation is showing up ready to talk honestly.
